The Drifter - Poem by Gloria Comingore

Are you the drifter they say you are?
Will you stay or will you go I really need to know?
Before we go much further dear please just let me know.
They say my heart will be broken if I ask you to stay.
Are you a drifter dear, they say that you are?

Do I risk my heart today before you walk away with another guy?
If I told you how I felt would you smile as you walked away?
Please tell me dear can I depend on you to stay?
Or will I watch your back as you drift into someone else’s arms?
They say I’ll have a broken heart if I ask you to stay.

Are you the drifter they say you are?
Will you stay or will you go I really need to know?
Before we go much further dear please just let me know.
They say my heart will be broken if I ask you to stay.
Are you a drifter dear, they say that you are?

Should I listen to those who have known you before?
Or perhaps my heart can tell if you will stay or go.
If I were to ask you dear I wonder what you’d say.
You see my hearts been broken once or twice before.
I just need to know if it will be broken once more.

Are you the drifter they say you are?
Will you stay or will you go I really need to know?
Before we go much further dear please just let me know.
They say my heart will be broken if I ask you to stay.
Are you a drifter dear, they say that you are?

If we go further, I’ll only have myself to blame.
For I have been warned about you by those before.
I called you on the phone last night, but you were not there.
A friend told me he saw you with this other guy.
Will you be my gal and tell this man goodbye?

Are you the drifter they say you are?
Will you stay or will you go I really need to know?
Before we go much further dear please just let me know.
They say my heart will be broken if I ask you to stay.
Are you a drifter dear, they say that you are?

I wrote you a letter, but I just tossed it away.
Maybe I’ll go buy a bottle of gin to drown my troubles in.
At least then I’d have something else to think about.
But what the heck is a headache better than a broken heart once again?
If you stay I’ll be ok, but if you go I’ll have to know.

Are you the drifter they say you are?
Will you stay or will you go I really need to know?
Before we go much further dear please just let me know.
They say my heart will be broken if I ask you to stay.
Are you a drifter dear, they say that you are?
