The Drums Poem by Codi Marie Ryan

The Drums

The distant drums beat beat beating,
The tempo, the pace, my heart races when I see you.
What will I become? Smoke, water?
I feel as if I will melt.
Here, there, anywhere, so you can see
See the pain, the agony, the angst,
And see the happiness that lights up my world when you are there.
You’re laugh sends my soul to Heaven.
For kindness, for servitude.
And to Hell.
For treason, for infidelity.
For loving you has no end
And I anticipate becoming yours and you mine
But I cannot have you.
I will; I shall!
You are the only one for me
It’s written in books, and stars, and calendars
Everywhere I look,
O, you are there.
Everywhere I walk,
I hear your footsteps
Tap tap tapping
Drawing nearer to where I stand
Standing here before you and your sweet perfume lingers
I hear the distant drums
Beat beat beating the tempo of my heart.
