The Enemy Was Me Poem by Randy McClave

The Enemy Was Me

My enemy was not you
It was me,
I didn't believe what I did see.
The stories were not true
But, them I believed,
I was used, and deceived.

I never walked in your shoe
But, I called you a liar,
It was me who stirred hell's fire.
Hateful remarks were constantly threw
Which bought both pain and sighs,
It was my lies.

To help others I quickly withdrew
After my party had spoke,
I thought we all pulled the same yoke.
Now my debt is finally due
I looked at what I helped create,
Lies, fear, bigotry and hate.

I now sit alone in a pew
Wondering how can I ever talk to God,
I was a fraud.
The truth I always knew
But, for it I didn't care or wanted to admit,
I wanted to judge and hit.

When there stood only two
A vicious wolf and a caring welp,
The wrong one I did help.
The foe it was never you
I now can plainly understand and see,
I destroyed our country.
