The Falling Man (9/11) Poem by Judith Evans

The Falling Man (9/11)

Rating: 5.0

And then he jumped

In the moments before he jumped
A calmness settled over him the likes of which he had never known
They had chosen to kill him
But he would not let them choose how he died.

He had experienced fear beyond imagination
Inflicted by those with unimaginable hate
What had he done to invoke such rage?
The family man..oh God..my children.

He would not let the flames take him
There would be no rescue now
Too late
Still, silent, serene

And then he jumped

His body fell
But his soul soared to the sky
Peace...if only for him.

I'm almost speechless - the irony of the last line. I'll give it a 10 - in fact, I'll take it as a favourite
