The Final Rampart Poem by Alexander Steen Stewart

The Final Rampart

The fortress of my mind is stout,
And yet I fear to stay.
For its strength I have come to doubt,
This could be its final day.
Great hordes of thought my walls immure,
And it's your flag they fly, I'm sure.

Our forces clashed one time before,
A most bitter rout you caused.
You left me gasping at Death's door,
For now hostilities have paused.
But here again you rise, before my final rampart,
To tear my mental fortress down. To tear my mind apart.

And by this paper each shall find,
How you drove me from my mind.

I liked the metaphor used for mind as fortress... and liked the verses below for it evokes a picture in my mind of uncertainity and distress. 'But here again you rise, before my final rampart, To tear my mental fortress down. To tear my mind apart'. Having said that, I like colours, smells, feelings, names, and any other precious little details splattered in poetry that I fall in love with. The use of the simplest words in the language and being direct rather than being ambiguous I see as strength... none other.
