The Food Chain Poem by Edwina Reizer

The Food Chain

I see cows in the pasture of green
eating grass in the early morn.
They have no cares in this earthly life,
none since they were born.

Intent on feeding they aren’t aware
how I’m watching them graze.
They follow the shade, avoiding the sun
on all their continuous days.

They’re constant eaters. They don’t seem to stop
until they’ve had their fill.
They’re unaware of the fate that awaits them,
unaware of the kill.

But I think about it and it makes me sad
and yet just like they eat
I tend to forget my sadness
when I eat a piece of meat.

The food chain, the food chain,
there must be a better way.
But I rationalize my thinking
when I order a petite fillet.
