The Gang Gang Cockatoo Poem by Francis Duggan

The Gang Gang Cockatoo

I've heard that voice a couple of times before
Like creaking sound of creaky opening door
The unmistakeable voice of the gang gang cockatoo
A rare species of bird though I have seen a few.

A slaty gray feathered bird male with scarlet band on head
And by nature lover I have heard it said
That 'twas the Aboriginals first called them the gang gang birds
And the Aboriginals have a way with words.

And I've been told that the gang gang pair for life
And that male gang gang only has himself one wife
And that they make their nest in hollow of gum tree
A slight increase to gang gang family.

And though the gang gang don't have a happy song to sing
And their voices don't have a pleasant ring
Yet I can hear my inner self rejoice
Each time I hear their squeaky door like voice.
