The Gold Coast Poem by Francis Duggan

The Gold Coast

The last time I was on the Gold Coast on a week late Autumn holiday
The weatherwas quite warm and humid even for coastal south Queensland in May
The home City of wealthy sugar daddies walking with far younger beauties hand in hand
In their swim suits with their bikini clad lovers barefooted on the beach on the sand
The last time I was on the Gold Coast such beautiful birds there I did see
Rosellas and lorikeets quite beautiful birds of the parrot family
In the parklands flocks of noisy miners birds for their territorial aggression well known
They mob and try to drive other birds from their borders and claim territory for their own
The sub tropics of south Queensland for me a bit warm the sun shines there for most days of the year
Where the beautiful flute like song of the pied butcherbirds is always a joy for to hear
A lot of far southern retirees go to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast to live their twilight years
Not all of them does remain faithful to their ageing though well preserved old dears
If ever I return to the Gold Coast it will not be for a long stay
Though it is a nice place to visit if only for a brief holiday..
