The Great Avarice Belief Poem by Danny Draper

The Great Avarice Belief

We went down to the beach today,
Where dugong feed on seagrass
Dolphins play at peace
And nature wiles away.

We went down to the port today,
The channel had been dredged
And all the spoil deposited
On the reefs not far away.

The train came to the port today,
The rail line had been laid
And all the trees cleared
Along land from far away.

Coal came to the port today,
The overburden was removed
And the sacred country gone
Its history stripped away.

Soil came to the port today,
The loaded rivers wealth
And settled out on coral
Currents pushing it away.

Ships came down in the port today,
Oil smeared the pristine
And despoiled unique life
Besmirching far away.

Contaminants from the port today,
Swelled choking tides
And East Coast Current
Moving death away.

We went down to the ports today,
The ships long gone
The world moved on,
Folly took our reef away.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
For the unfathomable stupidity of industrial development that will irrevocably harm and destroy the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef by dredging and dumping of spoil to facilitate a coal export port.
