The Half Life Of Polar Bears (Ii) Poem by Percy Dovetonsils

The Half Life Of Polar Bears (Ii)

Polar bears
are one of our
newest species,
newer than man,
exploding in the Arctic
only 30,000
years ago.

Perhaps 30,000
are left
to starve
on shrinking ice floes.
Blink
and they'll be
15,000.
Blink again
7,500.

And so on.
The world's largest
land predators
halving ever thinner
ever fewer

till
blink
there will be
just
one.
Blink.
Then half of
one
and blink
half of
half of
one.

A paw,
or a muzzle,
blink,
a stub of a tail,
blink
a fluff of white fur
blowing away
blink
in a superheated
blink,
Arctic,
blink,
wind.
