The House Of Love Has Fallen Poem by Lora Colon

The House Of Love Has Fallen

Rating: 5.0

No one lives in this house anymore,
Long vacant, it fell into decay,
Once occupied by two loving hearts,
Now parted, each gone its own way

Shall I relate the wondrous things seen
In this house that will never more be?
If a tear or two runs down your cheek,
Weep if you must, weep along with me

I scarce can speak of things I have seen
Without tears welling in my eyes,
But is this not to be expected
Walking through the ruins of Paradise?

You should have seen the warm, loving light
That spilled forth from each window pane,
Never mind the snow upon the sill
Nor the gales that brought the pounding rain

This house had withstood many a storm,
This fortress with its stanchions of love,
Who knew that Fate would come blast the ledge,
Knocking it off its base with one shove!

Let's walk the garden one last time,
Does the silence not cause you to grieve?
The birds have left, not a flower blooms,
Perhaps it would be best if we leave

I blow the coals, but they will not blaze,
Cold ashes upon a dead hearth lay,
How futile is the battle we wage
With Fate, for it will have its way

No one lives in this house anymore,
The window panes are cracked and broken,
The orchard is overcome by rot,
Love's last words have been spoken

Desolation sweeps over me as I work through each stanza, thinking I know where I am headed but dreading the destination. And here we are. Love is dead. Is there no more desolate, painful thing? Pain not arising from what once was, because in death there is only anesthetic numbness. Pain arising from a heart set apart and looking upon the fallen house, knowing what was. Knowing what might have been. Beautiful writing, Lora. So movingly crafted.
