The Invincible Birthday Candle Poem by Clive Blake

The Invincible Birthday Candle

'The Greatest... the Most Superb...
The Invincible Birthday Candle..! '
It was at the peak of its career,
It was much too hot to handle.

Its boasts always waxed, never waned,
It made the other candles sick,
Its bragging claims enough to get on
A more modest candle's wick.

No challenger came forward...
Though not through lack of spine,
They just watched and waited,
Preferring to bide their time...

Night after night, it would bluster away:
'On me, no other candle is a patch, '
Then one day it was stuck into a cake,
And it finally met its match.
