The Invitation Poem by JAMES T. ADAIR

The Invitation

Rating: 5.0

I waited by morning
I waited by noonday light
I waited through dusk
And through the night

I thought about you longingly
and it hurt so but felt so right
against my dark loneliness
You felt so bright

The simple kind words you said
Echoed as I lay in bed
The invitation filled me with excitement and dread
I need you so much, without the hope you bring I'd feel almost dead

But each time I checked
There was no sign of you
No trace of you
Nothing in view

I missed you
Dreamed that I kissed you
But you never came
And today was the same

Waiting for a promise
That’s been revealed as lame
To one it's a dream
To the other, just a game

But there is nothing I can do
but wait for you again
Because even lies
Are better than lonely pain
