The Last Great Bard Of Mushera Poem by Francis Duggan

The Last Great Bard Of Mushera

'The last great bard of Mushera' that name with him will stay
And he will be remembered for forever and a day
Before i started going to school the bard was in his prime
John Twomey's was a household name and that's going back some time.

At parties and get togethers reciters oft did quote
A poem or two or maybe three that John Twomey had wrote
A hark back to the old days his verses were sublime
The poet of the people he had that gift of rhyme.

His songs were of the people and none so great as he
To glorify local success the football victory
He spread the gift of happiness when i was little boy
And in Muskerry and Duhallow his fame will never die.

When John Twomey emigrated he faded from the scene
And many claim with much regret that his best had not been seen
But he was there to pen the songs when bonfires lit the skies
And people west of Millstreet sung 'The Ballydaly Boys'.

I never met John Twomey though of him i did know
But still his songs come to me from all those years ago
The last great bard of Mushera that name with him will stay
And he will be remembered for forever and a day.
