The Nature Of Love Poem by James Walter Orr

The Nature Of Love

How shall I thank you for your love?
Words are inadequate to say
The depth from down to up above;
From left to right and every way.

Outside to in, topside to down,
From furthest there, to nearest here,
The smallest village, biggest town,
And all the things I hold most dear:

In aggregate or one by each,
Just don’t suffice to give a clue
Of how my heart will always reach
For ways to show my love for you.

Our book has not the words we need,
Nor does it have that special page.
Superlatives are weak indeed,
To serve us in this day and age.

Oh, speak to me beneath these lines
Where darker currents always flow,
Down deep where lie the grand designs;
Designs we cannot fully know.

How puny is the scope of man,
How limited his feeble reach.
One speaks of love each way one can,
But love is not defined by speech.

Love freely given from the heart
Is freely taken the same way:
With naught to hold the souls apart;
Without the hint that one should pay.

How shall I thank you for your love?
I’ll meet your love, but no mistake.
My love is raw, with no kid glove:
I’ll give back more than I will take.
