The sun rose up to mark the East,
To guide them on their way,
They watched the shadows on the deck,
To track the passing day.
At night the stars were silver lamps,
That hung within the black,
They chose a bright and steady light,
To keep them on their track.
They felt the rhythm of the waves,
And read the shifting tide,
The ocean told its secret paths,
With nowhere left to hide.
They watched the flight of weary birds,
To see which way they flew,
And sniffed the scent of distant land,
Before it came in view.
With nothing but the moon and wind,
And wisdom in their eyes,
They sailed across the open blue,
Beneath the ancient skies.
