The Night I Stopped Praying

Poem by Peanuts Flores

Last night I sat on the edge of the bathroom bowl
Holding a cigarette on one hand and sipping coffee using the other,

Everybody seems to be thanking God for their answered prayers
While I still am hoping for one. It thus left me

Have I been cruel these past years, have I caused pain?
Why does He leave my prayers unanswered? These queries left me

There was never a time that I questioned Him before.
But when every aspect of your life is miserable
then you start asking...

Last night I sat on the edge of the bathroom bowl
puffing my second stick of cigarette

This was supposed to be a good year for someone born under the sign of the horse.
the Chinese horoscope said so.
Weeping again…

I was the epitomy of optimism for the first few months
I did everything to obtain what I wanted.
I was hoping…

Last night I sat on the edge of the bathroom bowl
Puffing my last stick for the night…I’ve decided…
I’d stop praying…
