The Only Escape Poem by Jo Anna Griffiths

The Only Escape

Fear and terror pulse through my veins,
my heart pounding the warning that
there is no escape.

Struggling to breathe, with his hand clasped around me,
my imaginary figure for
this disorder that binds me.

The room dances around me, mocking me with its cheer,
while I face the
darkness that looms ever near.

Shaking in my skin, the frigid air stings;
the sun brings no warmth to
a heart that's dying.

Trapped by the terrible beast within me,
the only escape is through
cutting.
