The People Who Govern The Nation Poem by Francis Duggan

The People Who Govern The Nation

The people who run the Government of the Nation have us believe life without them would not go on
But there will be life in the Nation when from politics they have long gone
And there will be birth, death and suffering and there will be laughter and tears
When they will be long with the departed from this day a century of years.

The people who govern the Nation are not as clever as they think they might be
To think we all should believe in them though they do con the majority
Into believing that they are quite special though some through their deception can see
If they are such wonderful people how come so many live in poverty?

The people who govern the Nation boast of the Nation's good economy
But that the Nation's poor keep getting poorer does not seem so marvellous to me
To make the bureaucrats more wealthy the working poor they did create
A booming economy for many people means they have less food on their plate.

A booming economy is worthless to the homeless who live rough on poverty street
From sleeping rough the clothes they wear shabby and with blistered feet and rotting teeth
They do not make for a pretty picture their lives ruled by worry and stress
They cannot even apply for welfare since they do not have a postal address.

The people who govern the Nation of the Nation's good economy boast
And though the upper middle class to the wealthy to them always will drink a toast
The working poor keep getting poorer with nothing left only their pride
And the wealthy they keep getting wealthier in the great economic divide.
