The Poor Dalit Girl... Poem by Bijay Kant Dubey

The Poor Dalit Girl...

The poor Dalit girl
I can see her growing
In abject poverty,
Living on left-overs,
Stale food.

The poor hut her house,
The date mat her bed
And she arising by cockcrow,
Sleeping by nightfall.

Goats, sheep, hens and ducks
By her side at a distance
And she taking it for granted
Without any qualm or complaint
Taking it to be her destiny.
