The Prayer Poem by Wilma Horne

The Prayer

Rating: 2.5

She wipes a tear from her eyes
As she thinks about how
How things got to be the way they are
She thought that he loved her
But time has shown her the truth
He wasn't the man of her dreams
He was her worst nightmare

She runs out the door and to the car
Turns the radio up loud and heads out of town
As she crosses the state line, she sends up a silent prayer
In the middle of nowhere, she pulls to the side of the road
Lays her head on the wheel and lets the tears freely flow
It is in this moment that she finally feels whole
Like her whole world is right

But with this in mind she remembers a guy
A guy who was there for her through everything
As soon as she thought of this guy, she smiles
And turns the car around and heads to a new destination
When she arrives in front of the familiar house
She wipes her face and bravely heads up to the door

She knocks twice with no reply
But as she starts to go, she hears the door open and a voice call out
She turns back around and walk up the stairs
As she passes him, he places his arm around her
He doesn’t ask any questions
Just comforts her like so many times before

In the back of her mind she thinks:
This is where I truly belong
This is my safe harbor
