The Promise Poem by George Cooke

The Promise

Where is the love we yearn to experience?
Where is the long forgotten acquaintance?
Where is the promise to love and embrace?
Where is the challenge we are called to face?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Where is the joy we are eager to harness?
Where is the return to youthfulness?
Where is the rose garden we desire to lie in?
Where is the world devoid of sin?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Where is the peace we earnestly crave?
Where is the compassion we try not to stave?
Where is the tranquillity we hope to gain?
Where is the end to strife and pain?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Where is the patience we are keenly taught?
Where is the much desired food for thought?
Where is the thoughtfulness of one another?
Where is the assistance extended to a brother?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Where is the kindness we need to express?
Where is the deed to pardon and bless?
Where is the stirring of giving all?
Where is the determination, whatever befall?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Where is the goodness in every deed?
Where is the commitment to help those in need?
Where is the passion to always serve?
Where is the source of having such nerve?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Where is the faithfulness to know and follow?
Where is the pledge to never wallow?
Where is the courage to express loyalty?
Where is the anticipation of joining royalty?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Where is the gentleness to love and care?
Where is the power to be strong yet never scare?
Where is the humility to convey a smile?
Where is the effort to go the extra mile?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Where is the self control and restraint?
Where is the discipline we must acquaint?
Where is the drive for dedication to commitment?
Where is the preparation for final judgement?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Where is the reassuring and abiding hope?
Where is the guidance helping us cope?
Where is the indication of a bright day?
Where is the dawn, will it come what may?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Where is the diminishing of hate?
Where is the ending of such a state?
Where is the removal of hurt?
Where is the pressure we need to exert?
Is it too much to ask…
To accomplish such a daunting task?

Look within for the promise, and claim
All that has been provided in His name.
The Fruit of the Holy Spirit
Are for you and yours to inherit.
For guidance never fail to ask
Cause with Him it will never be too daunting a task.
