The Promise Of Youth Poem by Edwina Reizer

The Promise Of Youth

The youth are the lucky ones
For they can’t see beyond
The present day they’re living.
They haven’t forged a bond.

Shackles do not bind them.
They are free to roam.
Responsibilities are far from their minds
They are at ease and at home

With whatever the day brings them,
Whatever it is they see.
If only they could retain this,
But this can never be.

For life is fleeting and youth is too.
They start to realize
That all the contentment of youthful days
Is no more in their eyes.

All that they had in their yesterdays
They do not have today.
The freedom of thought and wild spun dreams
Seem to have gone away.

Take them all back. Don’t let them die.
Don’t let them leave your head.
For without those youthful dreams you’ve had
There’s nothing but uneasiness ahead.
