The Rock Poem by Mona Lisa Aspiras

The Rock

I am a Rock
I stand there silently, placidly,
While gentle waters rush and
Caress my skin.
All is well.

The sun beats down on my brow.
I give rest and shelter to a tired
Iguana, content to catch some
Rays.

I am now in a jungle.
Moss is happy, for it now inhabits me.

I am in the playground.
Children paint funny faces on me and
Use me to play hopscotch.

I am Stonehenge, time stands still.
Tourists admire me.
I'm History.

I am Earth.
I am the Foundation.
I am necessary, ever-present,
And things rely on me.

Rock is stable,
Rock is good.
Rock is steady, as it should.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem has a lot of imagery but it's mainly about symbolism and identity. I wrote this during a low period in my life where I had a hard time accepting myself (haha - my angsty youth)and in self discovery and catharsis, I decided to write a poem about rock. It came as an epiphany when I identified myself as a rock- not boring, plain, etc. but reliable, strong, and more. This was one of my first forays into poetry- a surprisingly successful one that always seems to delight people- probably because of its honesty, coming straight from the heart.

A nice little poem, with a penetrating glance into within the self. Expressed metaphorically, as if she is singing about rock.
