The Serpent

There she is disheveled and dirty
By the sidewalk begging for change

She was young once full of dreams
Desires and longings for a life
Over the rainbow the impossible garden
A child of her times to be and to do

There was no serpent to entice her
There was no serpent to tell her lies
And there was no tree to eat its fruit
To gain wisdom and knowledge
She carried the serpent within her
