In my dreams I still see what has long passed by
Visions of a grey sea under a greyer sky
And a desert shore there lonely lying
Grey as the soul there lonely crying
There I stood gazing at that melancholic vision
Where nor heaven or earth could find division
No dim light descending could find rest
And shivering winds blew from the far west
Winds, waves and clouds above
Received no guest, nor man nor dove
And the only one there wandering was me
Lonely as the sky, lonely as the sea
Neither was there any ship or sail
Nor trace in that sand, white and pale
No hope was seen in that pitiless waves
Where other souls as mine had found their graves
Everyone had gone to a far happier land
Where shines the sun as shiny as the sand
And there stood nothing, nothing but me
Me, the shore, the sky and the sea
