It is in the spelling of a name,
The resonance of a voice,
The memory of what could never be
That matters most each day.
It is knowing a face I have never seen
Responding to a touch I never knew,
Feeling deep in my belly the stone of you
And hearing whispers of love in morning light.
You ask whether I love you
And before I answer, you know what I will say.
I need to hear from your lips what you want from mine
And whether you say it or not, I simply know.
We are shadows that move separately but become one.
We are stars moving restlessly across a night sky
To hover above the one we love
And we are the steam rising from a river on a cold dark night.
Now we both know that no one can separate us…
We are the only ones who can do that,
Yet we find we cannot allow the ever-threatening ending.
We keep looking for the spelling of a name, and we tremble.
