I missed the early morning show outside my house today,
Yet I saw Nature on the go, despite three hours' delay.
The sparrows on the purple tree, yes, one, two, three and four,
Yet even more, for me to see and then count up the score.
The seven flitted here and there, and with a sudden whoosh,
The little birds displayed such flair, then settled in a bush.
Within a minute, they appeared upon a neighbour's wall,
Four swooped across the street and neared my garden fence, so tall.
As they alighted side by side, with such amazing grace,
My little eyes were opened wide! You should have seen my face!
They flopped right down upon the ground and pecked and pecked and pecked,
And every blade of grass they found was dutifully checked.
They flew up to the garden rail, then to the neighbour's tree!
And way up high, where white clouds sail, white birds were there to see!
Across the street, more sparrows met, a dozen at a guess,
Then off they flew as if to get more food and happiness.
A magpie then came into view upon a neighbour's roof,
And in seconds, I saw two, united, not aloof.
One swooped across the street to land in that large garden there,
The other swooped, and both looked grand as if beyond compare.
I'm glad they joined the neighbourhood, they really make me smile,
They waddled just like penguins would and yet with flair and style.
And then a well-loved sight was seen, a robin redbreast bird,
Upon the long bush, tall and green, was where that sight occurred.
I have a fondness in my heart for robins near and far,
What gentleness they each impart, yes, each one is a star.
I'm glad I got to celebrate what Nature brought to see,
At just turned eight, the show looked great, especially to me!

Here is another street-view Nature Study poem by the Poemhunter poet Denis Martindale. In this poem, the show shifted to feature several sparrow spectacles, two magnificent magpies and a tiny solitary robin. Each minute had its own touch of magic, surprise and splendour. What a wonderful, rewarding start to yet another Summer's day!
