The Stranger In My Home Poem by Casualty of Chaos

The Stranger In My Home

Rating: 5.0

I met a man when I was sixteen.
He showed me that I could care.
It was the strangest thing I'd ever seen,
for I thought my heart and soul laid bare.
He was the missing link to my broken chain.
He was the light in my dark, empty sky.
He convinced me that love could remain.
He gave me the desire to finally try.

I married him in July ninety-nine,
and a child was already on the way.
I thought this love would always be mine;
nothing could ever take him away.
It was not at all like a fairy tell,
but at that time, I could not see.
Day after day we went through hell.
I thought it was him; he thought it was me.
It was not only words, but a physical war.
But in my heart he was still my prince.
I thought our love would eventually restore.
I guess we both lacked common sense.

Years went by and a family grew.
Two little girls were born to us.
I still believed our love was true,
although nothing was as I thought it was.
It seems as if I woke one day,
and found a stranger in my bed.
I couldn't find a thing to say.
I didn't know what should be said.
The man I fell in love with at sixteen
was nowhere to be found.
He had been lost in all the between.
Perhaps, I too, was not around.

It was then that I realized,
for years I had a stranger in my home.
He was too unknown to criticize,
and I was so afraid of being alone.
I guess I was too blind to see
that alone was all I ever was.
For I didn't know him, and he didn't know me.
And we could never again be 'us'.

This poem, narrative, is very poignant and also filled with a later understanding of this couple's failure to remain together. Thanks.

'The sun shone through the leaves, Casting shadows on the lawn Following my love's death I became quiet and withdrawn A wonderful breeze whispered The darkest hour is just before the dawn When you miss your life's reason Be patient and serene as swan' touching poem....thanks for sharing
