The Teachers Lament Poem by Teedy Dawn

The Teachers Lament

At first, things were fine; we got on quite well,
Sharing our thoughts we started to gel
The hours that we spent together were few
But, they meant such a lot and all of us knew
That we were quite special, a team built to last
We looked to the future and didn’t dwell on the past.
But, then something changed, I don’t know quite what
Did I do something wrong, did I lose the plot?
My phone calls weren’t answered, my emails ignored
I started to think perhaps they’ve got board
I tried to ask why, but no response came
So I put in more effort, but all was in vain
I just never saw them and had to contend
That perhaps it was over and this was the end.
Then suddenly out of the blue they appear
Needing my time, holding me dear
Oh Teacher they cry please help us right now
We've course work to finish and just don’t know how
You see our future's at stake and time has run out
So you just have to help us, this instant, don’t pout
You must see us right now to get all this done
I know we skipped lessons, and probably should’ve come.
But that’s all behinds us, you’re special and kind
So mark all our stuff and if you don’t mind
Return it tomorrow as the deadline is now
And if you do, we promise, we vow
That we will be better, consistent and true
So next when we meet we won’t say ‘who are you? ’
We will remember that you’re helpful to us
And won’t run away and jump on a bus
As you stand there waving and going bezerk
Because we've not been to class or completed our work
No, we’ll get back together and things will be fine
And perhaps if you’re lucky we'll value your time.
