Take care for her, whose mother heaven took,
While a child and the love is all she little knew,
A tender flower, chilled by the winter's look,
That wilts in the storm and thunder's brew.
Under pitiless step-parents she grew alone,
A shepherdess, no teacher's voice she heard;
Still nature was the guide her soul had known,
And taught her all through silence, it was a word.
Her girlishness forbids her mouth to plead,
She asks for nothing, though she suffers more,
But gives to those in greater want and need,
And feeds the hungry that knock at her door.
She prays at dawn and dusk, her voice so dear
O, take great care of her, of this be sure.
