The Unknown (1994) Poem by Lil Sutton

The Unknown (1994)

I can't wait until it's over
I wish it was the ending but instead it's just the begining.
The waves of hope and desperation come rolling in.
My mind is the sandy beach,
Slowly being washed and corroded away.

Will my prayers be answered?
Or will my thoughts come true?
Not knowing is like falling into a hungry well.
When it's too late realising the bottom is hell.
There's so much out there.
So many things unknown.

Will I end up at the edge of nowhere?
Will I break down in despair?
Hope is like a small trickle of water in the desert
It is soon lapped up by dry tounges.

So many things to learn, but often at my own cost.
Learning from my own mistakes is a big loss.

Maybe I'll be able to save myself
Maybe end up at the edge of somewhere.
The test of time is a torture to the mind.
But peace I hope to find.

Knowledge of this unknown world is what I want and it is what i will have.
My hope will no longer be a trickle but araging ocean rolling in on the desert sand.
The dry tounges will no longer crave for what they don't have.
