The Walk - Poem by Pralini Naidoo

There is a place I go to
up on the hill
where the sky seems larger
and the distant buildings minute

So like Alice I stand in this disproportionate space
Like it belongs to me

From here I spy pocket sized buildings which seem like
lego pieces …as though with a wave of my whimsy
I could rearrange them

But everything is linked to a collective skyline
An uninterrupted flow of line and curve
With its ubiquitous blue sea backdrop
even the foul puffs from fuel factories

It is as it is
My Durban – right now

So here I stand on this place
up on the hill
held by a larger sky
hugging an entire city
