The Wannon In Drought Poem by Francis Duggan

The Wannon In Drought

The Wannon river has never been so low
Through the bare and dry paddocks at a trickle it does flow
The aged farmer says I've never known it so dry
And the sun every day burning in the blue sky.

The bullants are crawling across the sunbaked ground
And the bushflies in their millions are buzzing around
The farm dams almost empty and bone dry every drain
The landscape could do with a few weeks of rain.

It has been many years and many Seasons gone by
Since the locals have seen the Wannon flow bank high
One might say the old river all but has died
The locals pray for rain for the dry countryside.

The old Wannon river has all but stopped flowing
And in the parched paddocks only thistles are growing
And in the dry heat of the day in the last week of the Spring
The bushflies are buzzing and few birds do sing.
