They Know Not What They Do Poem by Emma Beverage

They Know Not What They Do

I recently reread this poem and
realized that it needed one
more verse to be complete.
June,2010

Jesus, oh sweet Jesus,
I’ll gladly bear your cross
when people act like the soldiers
who nailed you to the cross.
I’ll pray for them sweet Jesus
for I know their souls are lost.
Their hatred blinds them to your light
they don’t know their hatreds cost.
It has cost them your Kingdom.
Oh what a price to pay.
To abuse part of your creation
how can they do this thing?
In you I’ll place eternal trust,
carry this burden that I am thrust.
I am walking in your footsteps
no greater honor can I have.
My soul may be filled with pain
But I suffer in your name.
Jesus, oh sweet Jesus,
I’ll bear this cross for you
and pray for those who harm me
for they know not what they do.

I ask for forgiveness from those
that I have hurt along my way.
Not that I intended to harm others
but the way I handled my fears
wasn’t so pleasant for all of my lovers.
I have learned that love is
like holding a butterfly.
If I hold too tight the Majik dust
falls from the butterfly
and the butterfly will wilt and die.
Or look for a safer place to land
than in my own unknowing hand.
So I pray for myself too,
For I know not what I do!
