This Morning Of Mourning Poem by Sarah Mkhonza

This Morning Of Mourning

Not just waking up but waking all,
this crowd sits in the rise of tall
wailing that reaches the sky. Legs
leaden and hearts too.
Wondering who has gone.
How far, this road to
the dark alley unfolds,
and in a suicidal gasp
we all have lost. Gone.
Disturbed minds tangle
things bottled up unsaid.
Now all is gone. Life zipped
and shipped off. Gone never
to return.

Found dangling in a room.
Schoolboy takes his life.
The headlines read and talk
goes on. This great silencing
mops the floor of our minds.
Leaves us perturbed like a duty
had to be done and no one heard
the call. We are left in a garden
of if only. Here no one answers
when you knock. Even the ground
is so hard, it is ready for tears
to fall and make it wet. For we
will lay down a youth. The grade
not important anymore sinks down
into the soil.

Police never visit a happy homr.
