Thoughts On Sitting With The Dead Poem by Sidi Mahtrow

Thoughts On Sitting With The Dead

It's said that hearing is last to go
As life's candle loses its glow.
So sit quietly and whisper thoughts of how
Being together is forever, not just now.

Remember as the lips grow cold
How the touch brought warmth when you were not yet old
And how so many things you planned to do
Will have to wait a while, but mention a few.

Then look to see the one who has been so dear
Resting peacefully. Tell her what you what want her to hear.
How you will someday be together and dance
Once again to the music of the old romance.

(In rural America it is customary for family and friends sit through the night with the one who has passed away.)
