I refuse to wear a watch.
My Mother said uniqueness was an issue for me.
Everything practical and necessary was useless
To her embittered, unpredictable child of many faults.
Yet the man upstairs chose – in his most amusing self
To have me on this earth.
What for – I'll never understand.
Even so, I refuse to wear a watch.
From childhood straight ahead into adulthood
I've had this little obsession with Time.
We never got along...
Constantly we'd quarrel –
Forever strapped into a heated, supernatural tug of war.
You see, I felt Time should move slower
Or in rhythm with what the soul craves most
Instead of clinging to the least –
Time didn't see it that way.
She found cryptic humor in human destruction
Laughed aloud at our hedonistic rages
Speeding the hours into minutes
Rubbing her hands together in impatience of our fate.
She'd get orgasmic joy viewing our demise
Minutes become seconds...
Vermillion droplets falling from dead fingers
Gave her pleasures most foul –
And even I – the sexual deviant
Have found disgust – covering my ears and eyes
The scene most horrific.
I refuse to wear a watch.
Time pisses me off!
She's been laughing in my face since I can remember
Stinking breath – hot on newborn skin
Predicting our battle a decade before
Telling me in not so many words –
'Get ready for the fight of your life! '
She gets beneath the surface
Shredding hopes – dreams – wishes
I take a piece of her with me every day...
When the workday is finished –
Or when I glance at Sun's death outside my bedroom window
Even at moon's rising as I close my eyes for slumber.
She is there – haunting my sleeping face
With Sun's birth – his rays a slap in the face
Reminding me of yet another day to live...
And then, dear reader...
Time is my constant companion – fiery lover
While others disappoint, walk away -
She's remained by my side.
As I write this she is hovering above me
Hand upon my right shoulder – whispering in my ear...
For now I feel love where once hate lived
Time's found warmth in my words – adoring me now.
But... we'll see how long this lasts...
Tomorrow's a new day.
And still...
My left wrist wears a band of Celtic knots
Purple flower – tender emerald leaves
The tattoo taking place of what once was there
That stupid time-keeper
Tick Tock
Tick Tock
Tick Tock
Still clicking in my head –
I don't care...
I will never wear a watch!
