To A Dying Year Poem by Oduro Bright Amoh

To A Dying Year

Oh the sad fate!
Firecrackers and blasts
Like dogs, bark at you.
The joy that has come to kill you
Is the happiness that gave you birth.
The self deceit that drove your minutes into a stop,
The same lies will run the hour
Thehopes which died in your bitter bosom
Have become curses, causes of courses of falling tears.
This fallen hope shall live again
On changed hearts, and die again
With the birth of a younger year.
Many weaknesses require strength,
Many strengths are born from weaknesses
Hope has not changed with changing years;
Tomorrow we will hope again.
And even though our most important wishes,
And our wretched cravings
Seldom suffice to fall upon any star,
We shall throw them like bait unto the still waters
If perchance we get a bite, and pull out our hooks
Finding them locked unto our fortune,
We shall beat our chests with pride
And claim the glory that was won by accident.
But if we lose both bait and glory,
Which sportsman has not lost before?
We will wait for next year's today
And hope and love and throw again.
Depart! Die in peace!
We have dreams we are willing to dream again
