To Write Before The Morning Light Poem by Shalom Freedman

To Write Before The Morning Light

TO WRITE BEFORE THE MORNING LIGHT

To write before the morning light
To pray before the dawn
To listen to the dark at night
And sense
one's soul is lost

To fear and fail and weep inside
To always be ashamed
To die inside before one's life
Can dare be real again

To rest in silence and in sleep
While really half awake
To know that one cannot change
One's many great mistakes

To be alone and be afraid
To always understand
All one will be is nothing more
Than nothingness at last.
