To Write About Writing Poem by Shalom Freedman

To Write About Writing

To write about writing
As if writing were the center
Not only of one's own world
But the world itself
To write about writing
As if the written word
Were the first and last development
Of human communication
As if the written word is of supreme value
And all else before and after
Are only a kind of direction to it
To be enslaved to the written word
And to writing itself
And to all its false pretensions
And then at some future not too distant time
To never be able to write again
And to know that one's own writing
Is simply an infinitesimally growing part
Of an ever-expanding chaos of words
Whose ultimate meaning is perhaps its own eventual disappearance.
