Too Dark To See Poem by Steve Coetzee

Too Dark To See

Do not tell me to smile,
Do not tell me things will get easier,
Do not tell me to pull myself together,
If I could I would.

Shall I tell you of my suffering?
Shall I tell you of my pain?
Shall I tell you of the things
That I cannot do?

Would that I could,
That I could enjoy life
As it was.
As it should be.

Tell me how to see
To see through
This dark veil
That hangs over me.

Tell me how to be
Able to break through,
This wall,
This wall that imprisons me.

Tell me again,
How much I
Have going for me,
All the things I cannot see.

For all you say,
I cannot feel
Feel as I once
Could.

Your words,
Your good words,
Do not,
Cannot,
Touch me
Any more.

It is too late,
All is growing dim
As the night,
The darkness,
Closes in.
It is the end.
