Too Tired To Care Poem by Leria Hawkins

Too Tired To Care

Date: March 19,2026

Cursed in life by the pain of my birth
Too far from heaven, I'm bound to this earth
To walk, or to crawl, to search everyday
Up from the ashes and be on my way
With burdens to carry, so heavy the load
To suffer the winter, so hungry and cold
To dig and to hoe and to rake all the day
Searching for promise to come in my pay
The hungry to feed with my toil and my sweat
Then take home the scraps not eaten as yet
My heads under water, a storm's overhead
A wolf at the door, demands to be fed
The road to all riches is promised tomorrow
I don't want to resort to beg, steal or borrow
Yesterday I thought that today was the day
But today, tomorrow seems so far away
The clock is still ticking, there's no time for fun
Can't rest on my laurels, with much to be done
Some are just born with a shovel in hand
To toil and to sow and to sweat on demand
I labor, I struggle to fill up the glass
For the yield to be gobbled by those born of class
What's left of the harvest is meager for sure
It's all they will forfeit and give to the poor

The road I have travelled though rocky and long
My life still has worth, my back is still strong
The roof over my head allows me to sleep
The lint in my pocket is all mine to keep
My dishes are washed, the wolves have been paid
My table is clean, my bed has been made
There's no time for pity, to worry, to moan
Tomorrow will bring new trials of its own
It's best to keep moving, lest you may fall
Don't stumble or stagger and don't drop the ball
Each day is a challenge; we stand up and face
We have to keep going to finish the race
No one is promised a life without stress
We just have to strive to give it our best
Life surely flies in the blink of an eye
So don't linger too long and let it pass by
With time winding down, the ending is near
I look at the heavens; the skies are all clear
The world keeps on turning, there's no time for rest
And while I may be weary, I know I am blessed
