Translation? Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

Translation?

As a child I listened, but did not hear
Mother and grandmother spoke quietly…
The language was foreign to my ears
They talked in whispers, almost silently

Why, I wondered… did everyday words
Recede into syllables of disguise…
Too disturbing for a child, to be heard?
The translation remained mutely wise.
