Trial Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Trial

The year?
2021.
And fading fast,
Are excuses to create.
To rely upon them made,
By anyone done.
Betting the odds,
Stay to remain in their favor!

Awakening everyday,
Are more who realize...
Life blessed to receive and live,
Is not done to do this...
On a trial basis.
That belief to keep,
Weakens one's defense...
Against reality and pretensions.

Everyone learns,
From mistakes to make.
Regardless who chooses,
To take steps in directions...
Attempting to avoid,
Truth to face.
With a turning away,
From obstacles to erase.
There is no path,
Guaranteeing safe passage!

Lessons to learn,
Is part of life and a requirement.
Fearing to become humiliated,
Offers no signs of exits.
For anyone anywhere to escape.
And many only grow,
Feeling more insecure to know...
Accusations made,
Alleging blame to place...
On others.
Seldom eliminates,
Their responsibility to be...
Held accountable,
For their own actions.
Actions eventually,
Discovered to be found...
A judgement to pass,
Finds them at fault and guilty.

'But...
Your Honor?
All my life,
I have been misunderstood.
And I have proof and evidence,
Of my innocence.'

-Hmmm.
I see.
And this evidence,
You claim can be produced?
The more it seems,
You have kept...
Your distance from it.
However...
Your dramatics are entertaining.
And your presentation?
Even brings tears to my eyes.
But...
Who and what helps,
The jury decide...
You are NOT without guilt?
Too obvious to notice,
You have lived a life to delude.
Relying on fiction.
And none of us are characters,
To replace with lies.
You rely in your head,
To continue to play.

Come closer.
I'd like to whisper this to you.
The year?
Is 2021.
Wake up!
Snap out of it.
Your guilty! -

'But...
Your Honor?
What is it that I am guilty of? '

-Not running away from home.-

'Not doing what? '

-Not running away from home!
When you...
Had that opportunity! -
