Getting to know someone is a crucial part of any relationship, be it platonic or romantic, or any other type. Building bonds takes time and patience that can sometimes take months or even years. But once those bonds are built, then that's when the hard part starts. Obstacles will arise that will push those bonds to the breaking point and only some are strong enough to get by unscathed. But once those bonds are broken, the pieces will never fit correctly again, be truthful to one another from the beginning in hopes things stay strong.
