Unfinished -Translation Poem Of TrầN Dạ Từ: Dang Dở Poem by NHIEN NGUYEN MD

When it was known that my heart was almost dead
Clouds ceased to be pink and leaves stopped to be green
Color of fresh flowers also faded on branches
And the whole universe was filled with darkness.

I tried to keep my heart not to be chaotic
So, in reverie, I can return to memories of my past
You and I strolled under shades of coconut trees
Under the moonlight that shone over a red rock paved road.

What did you say? I remembered clearly
What was the cause? Who could understand the reason
If a bird wanted to fly away, no one could stop it
When love was dead, it was hopeless to wish it revived.

I didn't blame you for what went wrong
I didn't feel sad because of my too uncertain fate
Nothing was wrong when a butterfly wanted to leave a branch
I just regretted the death of what I used to have.

But I already knew what was already dead
The more I felt sad, the more I wanted to weave that into a poem.
Our dream was still young, but it suddenly became exhausted
This is my last poem as a gift to you.

I sincerely wish that your life will always shine
With a happy youth like in a dream
With your sweet mind like pure fragrance
And evening concert offers you new silk threads of happiness in its new music.

This separation unexpectedly came on time
I feel nostalgic and bewildered before a turn
Not sure if it's better to go or to stay
It's better that Viet birds return to its old Nam city.

It's cold this evening with a lot of falling mists
But my heart has regained its balance
I don't feel distressed but I feel boiling up
A hidden spite of the time I took a wrong path.

I play the fool with the arts
I bring my talent to please the gaze of some dark-eyes
To beg for a friendly smile
Of a beloved daughter of a high social class family.

In the meantime, young men severed their attachments
They left their families, their schools, to join service
The threat of invasion is eminent at our border
And it calls for our young men to save our country.

It's now over my dear! From now on I will march
Please be reassured to enjoy your happy life
Please don't feel sad, regretful or pitiful
Many things happened according to our fate.

DANG DỞ

Khi biết lòng anh như đã chết
Mây thôi hồng mà lá cũng thôi xanh
Màu hoa tươi cũng héo ở trên cành
Và vũ trụ thảy một màu đen tối

Anh cố giữ lòng anh không bối rối
Để mơ màng tưởng nhớ phút giây xưa
Em cùng anh sánh gót dưới bóng dừa
Một đêm trăng sáng trên đường đá đỏ

Em nói những gì? Anh còn nhớ rõ
Nhưng làm sao? Ai hiểu tại làm sao
Chim muốn bay, cũng giữ chẳng được nào
Tình đã chết, có mong gì sống lại

Anh không trách chi em điều ngang trái
Anh không buồn số kiếp quá mong manh
Có gì đâu bướm muốn xa cành
Anh cứ tiếc cái gì xưa đã chết

Nhưng anh biết cái gì xưa đã chết
Anh càng buồn càng muốn kết thành thơ
Mộng đang xanh, mộng hóa bơ phờ
Đây bài thơ chót kính dâng tặng bạn

Và thành chúc đời em luôn tươi sáng
Như mộng kiều đầm ấm tuổi xuân xanh
Như hương trinh bát ngát ý dịu lành
Hòa nhạc mới chiều dâng tơ hạnh phúc

Cuộc ly biệt ngờ đâu vừa đúng lúc
Lòng bâng khuâng, bối rối trước khúc quanh
Đi không đành, mà ở cũng không đành
Muôn chim Việt hãy về thành Nam cũ

Chiều nay lạnh, có nhiều sương rơi quá
Nhưng lòng anh đã bình thản lại rồi
Hết đau buồn và cảm thấy sục sôi
Niềm uất hận của một thời lạc lối

Lấy nghệ thuật làm trò hề múa rối
Đem tài hoa cung phụng sóng mắt huyền
Để khẩn cầu xin một nụ cười duyên
Nàng kiều nữ chốn lầu hoa thầm kín

Trong khi đó, thanh niên không bịn rịn
Giã gia đình, trường học để ra đi
Họa xâm lăng đe dọa ở biên thùy
Kêu gọi lính giục lòng trai cứu quốc

Thôi em nhé! từ đây anh cất bước
Em yên lòng vui hưởng cuộc đời vui
Đừng buồn thương, nhớ, tiếc, ngậm ngùi
Muôn việc thảy đều do nơi số kiếp
