Unlikely Poem by John Howard Davies

Unlikely

UNLIKELY
By John Howard Davies 18th. January 2017.

Unlikely as a sword in stone
when we chanced upon that phone
discussing days of us alone
that never taunted us to moan
for we began a journey known
learnt from lovers dead and thrown
battles fought and lost and won
fear of others overcome
frightened by another one
who'd scoop us up still on the run
as we tread we go with stealth
gathering dust sat on a shelf
dust of ages dirt of days
now clearer vision in our way
words of wisdom cover love
to protect it from another shove
where it's found below, above
deep down low or in a dove
shades of wind that blew our sails
are remnants of much stronger gales
then they tore us left us empty
banging doors without an entry
guarded lies and focused tempers
raged within those gates we entered
sign your name and leave the pen
you'll not be needing that again
Snow on mountains oil in cars
shaded moonbeams bounce on stars
pretty dresses hang on rails
strength in numbers often fails
Slimmer waistlines handsome shoes
add to those who sing the blues
Funny failures walk those boards
listen to by jeering hoardes
they wear no armour
they have no swords
to pull from stone
with magic words
it's only feelings laid outstretched
that can convince a lovers bet
being a dead cert and a winner
can often be the worst of sinners
only we know what we know
without the aid of candle glow
all that glitters is not gold
but this love keeps away the cold.
