Untouchable Now Poem by Willem VanVoorthuysen

Untouchable Now

Sweetheart, you were here again last night,
in yet another happy dream about you and me,
or, so I thought, until I learned a bitter lesson...

I saw you standing by an open kitchen window,
just seven feet away, in that cute strapless blouse,
so innocently showing me your lovely shoulders...

Delightfully surprised, and drawn by irresistible
forces, I desperately wanted to touch again
those beautiful silken shoulders, as in the past...

I never had to beg you for a hug and kiss
whenever I longed for intimacy with you...
'So, why not now again? ', I asked myself.

When I reached out to touch you, darling,
my eager fingertips felt nothing..., nothing...
I saw your shape, your face, your smile...

This time, however you were different,
transparent, insubstantial, although you
still smiled at me like in previous dreams...

Then, suddenly you disappeared, and
left me cringing, crying on my knees,
'My God, what have I done to her? ? '

Have You been sending me her spirit
to lovingly, responsively touch mine,
but never to be physically approached?

My human longings and wild imagination
must yield to patience, gained in prayer,
before I'll see her blessed soul again...
Amen.
