Upon The Path Of Dreams Poem by Ono no Komachi

Upon The Path Of Dreams

Rating: 5.0

Upon the path of dreams
My feet don't rest,
Constantly trailing to you, yet
In reality, a single glimpse:
Not even that have I had of you.

Another translation by Kenneth Rexroth:

Although I come to you constantly
over the roads of dreams,
those nights of love
are not worth one waking touch of you.

Though I go to you ceaselessly along dream paths, the sum of those trysts is less than a single glimpse granted in the waking world.

another waka by Ono no Komachi, about dreams and juxtaposition of dreams and reality: 思ひつつ寝ればや人の見えつらむ夢と知りせばさめざらましを As I yearned for him I closed my eyes and there he was! Standing before me, If I’d known it was a dream I wouldn't have awoken..
